Football Manager 27 is set to overhaul several aspects of its Match Engine, with improvements to player movement, stamina, defending, attacking behaviour, and tactical control. The update also introduces Tactical Tweaks, giving managers more ways to react to matches directly from the touchline. The changes are designed to make matches more responsive and closer to real-world football, while giving player Attributes a greater influence on what happens on the pitch.
⚽ More Natural Movement and Player Behaviour
FM27's Match Engine will feature improved player models, body types and a wider range of on- and off-the-ball animations. The continued partnership with Hawk-Eye Innovations has also helped bring new skill moves into the game, including body feints, Elasticos and Heel Chops. Player Attributes will play a stronger role in these situations, with players possessing higher Flair and Dribbling more likely to produce creative and consistent attacking actions.
Movement speed has also been reworked using real-world Hawk-Eye data. Players will no longer accelerate unnaturally quickly when recovering defensively or turn at unrealistic speeds during off-the-ball runs.
🛡️ Stamina and Defending Receive Major Changes
Stamina will have a greater impact on how much ground players can cover and how frequently they can sprint during a match. It will also have a stronger effect on how quickly a player's condition deteriorates, making substitutes potentially more influential later in games.
Defending has received similar attention, with 1v1 situations becoming more dynamic through new jockeying movements. Defensive Attributes such as Marking and Anticipation will also have more influence on a player's effectiveness.
🎯 More Control Over Attacking Runs
The way players attack the penalty area has been redesigned to produce more varied attacking movements. Players should make better decisions based on their intelligence and the positioning of teammates and opponents, resulting in more varied cutbacks, crosses and double movements.
New Player Instructions will allow managers to specify how players attack the box. Depending on their position, players can be instructed to arrive late, attack the defensive line, or target the near post, far post, or central areas.
🧠 Tactical Tweaks Add More Touchline Control
One of the biggest additions is the new Tactical Tweaks system. It allows managers to make team and individual tactical adjustments during matches without opening the main Tactics Screen.
- Switch wingers between sides.
- Send the goalkeeper forward during late attacks.
- Increase the team's urgency.
- Use longer passes.
- Exploit the width of the pitch.
- Reduce the intensity of the press.
These tweaks remain active until the manager decides to stop them, with no limit on how many can be active at once. The dugout system will also provide information about tactical changes made by the opposition manager and suggest when a Tactical Tweak could be useful.
Tactical Tweaks will work alongside Shouts, which have also been rebuilt for FM27. Rather than simply providing minor attribute boosts, Shouts will now directly affect players' mental states, with staff providing feedback on their impact.

📊 Expanded Match Data
The Match UI has also been refreshed, with adaptive layouts and the ability to customise the information shown between highlights. Heat Maps and Action Zones are returning, alongside broader improvements to match data and the Data Hub.
