New details from LOVE Magazine Issue 27 reveal how Rockstar Games is approaching the world of Grand Theft Auto VI, with Leonida designed around the idea that virtually nothing exists simply as background scenery.
🌎 There Is No “Background”
Rockstar's Open World Writing Director James Horton describes Leonida with a simple concept: “There's no ‘background’. There's foreground you're not paying attention to right now.” Horton explains that players can hear snippets from around a hundred different conversations while moving through busy areas. If they decide to focus on something happening nearby, that element can effectively become the center of their attention. The idea is to make Leonida feel active and detailed even when players are simply moving through the world.
📻 Politics and Satire
According to the LOVE Magazine feature, Leonida will include fictional political campaigns, robocalls, radio commercials and political talk shows. Rockstar's writers also drew inspiration from conspiracy theories and unusual public reactions to everyday events. The studio is using these ideas to push reality further through satire, creating a world that is deliberately more exaggerated and grotesque. Leonida's radio will also satirize modern “culture wars”, continuing Rockstar's use of fictional media to parody contemporary society.
🌴 Ambrosia and Florida
Ambrosia, one of Leonida's inland regions, is heavily associated with Florida's sugar industry. Its setting has strong parallels with Clewiston and the Lake Okeechobee area, which are known for their sugar production. These locations are best described as real-world inspirations rather than a direct Rockstar confirmation that Ambrosia is a recreation of Clewiston.
