Civilization VII Is Free to Play on Steam Until September 10

The free play event began on September 3 at 10:00 AM PT and will remain available until September 10 at 10:00 AM PT. Players can download and experience the game through Steam during the promotion without having to purchase it upfront.

Once the free period ends, players will need to purchase the game on Steam to continue playing. Any progress and achievements earned during the free week will carry over to the purchased version, making the event a good opportunity to try the game before deciding whether to buy it.

Sid Meier's Civilization VII is a turn-based 4X strategy game developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2K. Players take control of a civilization and guide it through different stages of history, building cities, researching technologies, developing their culture, managing resources and competing with other civilizations.

As with previous entries in the series, players can pursue different paths to success, including military domination, technological development, cultural influence and economic growth. The game combines exploration, diplomacy, warfare and empire management, with decisions made throughout a campaign shaping the development of each civilization.

Civilization VII was released in February 2025, making it the newest mainline entry in the franchise. The game builds on the foundations established by previous Civilization titles while introducing new systems and changes to how civilizations and historical eras are handled.

For players who enjoy the free week and want to keep playing, Steam is also offering Civilization VII at a 50% discount during the anniversary promotion. The Standard and Settler's Editions are discounted until September 17 at 10:00 AM PT, while the Deluxe Edition's current promotion runs until September 10.
