Defender of the Crown is making its return after four decades. Announced during the Future Games Show Summer Showcase, developer Black Tower Basement and publisher Nordcurrent Labs revealed that Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns will launch on August 13 for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, bringing the classic strategy game back with updated visuals, refined gameplay systems, and an entirely new roguelite mode.
Three Ways to Experience the Classic
Rather than simply recreating the original, Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns offers three distinct ways to experience the classic strategy title, catering to both longtime fans and newcomers.
- Retro Mode preserves the original Amiga version of the game.
- Classic Mode reimagines the experience with modern visuals and smoother mechanics.
- Kingdom Mode introduces a roguelite deck-building structure combined with dice-based combat.
The approach allows players to revisit the original release or explore a more modern interpretation without losing the spirit of the classic Saxon-Norman conflict.
Kingdom Mode Adds Roguelite Deck-Building Combat
The biggest addition comes in the form of Kingdom Mode, which takes the familiar setting in a different direction. Players must unite the kingdom by fighting across the map and defeating three enemy lords in their strongholds while dealing with brigands, rogues, and Norman forces along the way.
Combat blends tactical deck-building with dice-driven mechanics. Army units determine a player's starting dice and score, while tactic cards can be played during battles to influence the outcome and gain an edge over opponents.
As each campaign progresses, new dice types, relics, and gameplay mechanics become available, gradually increasing the strategic complexity of encounters.
Randomized Events and Classic Activities
While the kingdom's regions remain fixed, events and encounters are randomized for every playthrough. Players can travel across the map, discovering points of interest and taking part in a variety of activities.
- Join tournaments.
- Rescue Saxon ladies.
- Raid settlements for gold.
- Besiege castles to weaken enemy armies.
- Explore randomized events and encounters.
These elements help ensure that no two runs unfold exactly the same way, even when pursuing the same ultimate goal.
