The first chance to try Stronghold 4 has arrived, with a playable demo now available on Steam ahead of the game's full release. Fans of the castle-building strategy series can get an early look at the upcoming installment and experience its gameplay before launch. Stronghold 4 is scheduled to release on Steam on December 7, 2026.
A Story Set Before the Original Stronghold
Stronghold 4 serves as a prequel to the original Stronghold, taking players back to medieval England before the events of the first game. The campaign follows Penryn of Wethel, a humble shepherd whose life is changed by conflict as he begins a journey toward becoming a military leader. The single-player campaign features 22 missions, introducing new characters alongside familiar faces from the series.
Build and Defend Your Medieval Stronghold
Castle construction remains central to the experience, with expanded customization options that let players design fortifications using a variety of structural pieces and decorative elements. Players must also manage their settlements, balance taxes and food supplies, and keep their population satisfied to maintain a stable economy. Environmental conditions influence gameplay. Snow can hinder crop growth, while heavy rain reduces archery range, forcing players to adapt their strategies. Outlaws, rival lords, defensive traps, and siege warfare add further challenges as players expand and protect their domains.
Try the Demo
The Steam demo includes Free Build mode, allowing players to experiment with castle construction and settlement management. Skirmish Mode is scheduled to join the demo on October 19 as part of Steam Next Fest, adding another opportunity to experience the game's tactical combat.
