NBA 2K27 is introducing a major gameplay overhaul
focused on making offense and defense more skill-based, with new
offensive tools, physical defense, an overhauled Takeover system, and
smarter AI.
🔥 More Creative Offense
New offensive options include step-through up-and-unders, expanded dribbling customization, and a new Dynamic Layup Engine that adapts finishes to the defender and situation. Advanced gathers such as Euro Steps, spins, and hop-steps are also dynamically combined instead of relying on preset animations.
The Dunk Meter is now mandatory for every dunk attempt, with its green window dynamically changing based on defensive pressure during the entire finish.
🎯 Rhythm Shooting Gets Reworked
Rhythm Shooting receives a major update with a real-time visual guide that tracks Pro Stick movement. Better tempo creates a wider green window, while rushed or slow movements make it smaller. Successful shots now require a green Timing release, and Rhythm Shooting has been expanded to free throws.

Defense has been redesigned around positioning and timing. New hands-up controls provide aggressive or conservative contests, while an eight-tier contest system gives clearer feedback on defensive impact.
Ankle Breakers are now skill-based, defensive cutoffs have been expanded, and a new collision system improves steals and ball security while reducing unrealistic bump steals.
â Takeover Gets a Complete Overhaul
The new Takeover system tracks Shooting, Finishing, Playmaking, Defense, and Rebounding independently during games. Each discipline progresses through six levels, from Frozen to Takeover, based on your performance.
Players can equip different abilities for each discipline, with 24 Takeover Abilities available to enhance specific aspects of their game.
🧠Smarter AI and Team Play
AI players now react more intelligently in transition, execute more sophisticated pick-and-rolls, recognize mismatches, and adjust offensive gameplans based on what is working. A new Set AI system also allows teams to build their offense around their star players.
Defensive AI has been improved with smarter rotations and matchup switching, with the system now recognizing twice as many defender types when deciding how to react.
