Smoke has shared an extensive overview of the features currently planned for Football Life 2027 (FL27),
confirming major improvements to gameplay, league structures, visual
customization, and Career Mode support. While the team usually targets a
mid-October release for each new season version, it says FL27 could
arrive later than expected due to the amount of work involved. A more
precise release window will be announced closer to launch.
The update introduces a redesigned switcher, significant gameplay changes, new competition support, and technical improvements aimed at making Career Mode more stable while bringing league structures closer to their real-world counterparts.
🎮FL27 Switcher Adds More Customization
The FL27 switcher expands the available customization options with several new features. Alongside the traditional SmokePatch red theme, players will be able to choose from six additional color palettes that automatically update theme-related files and interface elements.
A new lighting system is also being introduced. Cinematics and replays will use warmer lighting before dynamically switching to a more natural look once matches begin. Players who prefer a consistent presentation can use the switcher to force either warm or natural lighting throughout. The feature applies to all included stadiums and the upcoming stadium pack, although third-party stadiums with their own lighting files will continue using their existing settings.
Other switcher options include:
- PS5 controller button prompts or alternative controller layouts.
- Expanded Classic Teams settings, including a new option that allows classic clubs to appear in Master League while keeping legend players available in Career Mode.
- A Lockdown mode that removes spectators from stadiums while keeping crowd audio, which can also be muted through the game's audio settings.
- An option to remove replay logos for faster transitions.
🎮Gameplay Changes Become More Targeted
SmokePatch says one of FL27's biggest technical achievements is the near-complete mapping of the gameplay systems inside the game's executable. According to the developers, previous gameplay edits often relied on trial and error because the game did not clearly define how different systems interacted.
With a better understanding of those internal functions, future gameplay adjustments can be applied more precisely instead of experimentally.
Confirmed gameplay changes include:
- Player ratings adjusted to better match eFootball's rating scale.
- More tactically demanding gameplay.
- Updated player tendencies based on current real-life football.
- Additional tuning for areas such as free kicks, refereeing, stamina, and other gameplay systems.
A beta version of the updated gameplay has also been released for testing through a
replacement dt18 file compatible with all Football Life versions. The switcher will also let players return to the original PES 2021 gameplay if they prefer.
🎮Major Competition Improvements Confirmed
SmokePatch also outlined several long-standing Career Mode limitations that have now been resolved.
- France: Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 will return to their correct 18-team format while maintaining a working 36-team French Cup.
- Argentina: The league expands to all 30 clubs with a functioning schedule that now begins during the winter season instead of the previous summer calendar.
- MLS: The league grows from 20 to all 30 participating clubs with an updated schedule matching the 2027 season.
The team also confirmed that work continues on additional competition updates planned for future versions, including the new UEFA Champions League and Europa League formats, an updated FIFA World Cup format, Copa América expansion, African Cup of Nations changes, and additional leagues. SmokePatch is also researching ways to increase the game's current 749-team limit, although no solution has been confirmed.
🎮Season Update and Technical Improvements
As with previous seasonal releases, FL27 will include an updated database featuring promoted clubs, revised tactics and formations, and refreshed player ratings using eFootball as the baseline. The package will also include new graphics and audio assets, which SmokePatch says account for roughly 8 GB of data on their own, making a smaller upgrade package impractical.
The developers have also confirmed ongoing yearly updates to the game's internal executable to ensure that Career Mode and Edit Mode continue to function correctly. These updates include adjusting internal calendar systems, contract calculations, and player development logic so AI behavior remains synchronized with the current Career Mode season.
