GTA 6 Report Reveals New Gameplay Details About Jason, Lucia, and the Open World

October 19, 2026

A new report by Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier offers a closer look at Grand Theft Auto 6's development, open-world design, and gameplay systems. The report describes a more detailed environment, deeper interactions between protagonists Jason and Lucia, and expanded criminal activities, alongside Rockstar Games' efforts to balance realism with the series' signature humor.

Many of the specific gameplay details in Schreier's report have not been publicly confirmed by Rockstar, so they should be treated as reported information rather than a finalized list of features.

🗺️A Larger, More Detailed Open World

According to Schreier, some Rockstar artists have worked on GTA 6 for more than 11 years. Early research in Miami began in 2015, with developers accompanying police officers on ride-alongs, visiting dangerous neighborhoods, and photographing the city from helicopters to help recreate its environment. The report describes narrower roads, denser traffic, and more buildings than in GTA 5. Rockstar's workforce has also grown from approximately 2,400 employees in 2018 to around 4,700 in 2026, while its art production team has expanded from five or six people on GTA 5 to 65 on GTA 6. Development reportedly faced difficulties between 2019 and 2022 as Rockstar struggled to balance Red Dead Redemption 2's realism with GTA's traditional gameplay. Some designers left out of frustration, before the project began coming together in late 2022 and early 2023. The project reportedly began to take shape in late 2022 and early 2023, with the first trailer in December 2023 helping developers understand the game's overall direction. Schreier also notes that GTA 6 is so large that even senior developers may not know every detail, as individual team members have the freedom to add smaller elements to the world.

❤️Jason and Lucia's Relationship Will Offer More Interaction

Schreier reports that players will be able to initiate kisses and hand-holding between Jason and Lucia during free roam. Players can also invite their partner to hang out via text message, with the other character arriving after a few minutes. The pair can reportedly go shopping, work out, visit locations, and plan robberies together. Optional conversations will explore their relationship and personal histories, including a conversation in which Lucia's mother disapproves of Jason.

Players will reportedly have some control over the romantic side of their relationship, rather than being required to treat them as a couple throughout free roam. Rockstar has not publicly detailed the full interaction system or its controls.

🔫Robberies, Money, and NPC Reactions

The report describes hundreds of explorable interiors, some offering opportunities to steal money and valuables. Cash will reportedly play a greater role than in previous games, with players able to deposit it at ATMs to protect it from theft or loss.

Robberies may involve scouting locations, assessing security, disabling alarms, and stealing without alerting anyone. The wanted system reportedly accounts for Jason and Lucia committing crimes together, potentially allowing police to identify them as a pair. Escaping separately could help them evade capture.

NPCs will react to accidents and confrontations, sometimes escalating them into fights or police involvement. Random encounters may also lead to unexpected activities, while stealing and selling valuable vehicles can provide further criminal opportunities.

Rockstar is expanding the NPC interaction technology introduced in Red Dead Redemption 2. Schreier also describes highly detailed nightclub environments, with individually animated characters, scripted behaviors, music, lighting, and synchronized effects.

😆Realism Without Losing GTA's Humor

Rockstar reportedly spent years deciding how realistic GTA 6 should be, even considering whether players would need to physically collect groceries before purchasing them. The intended balance combines GTA 5's satire and absurd comedy with a more grounded, emotionally engaging story inspired by RDR2.

Unusual encounters, exaggerated criminal situations, and adult humor will remain part of the experience. Schreier also observed podcasts in the game during his visit.
